![]() ![]() This work was followed three years later by On the connexion of the physical sciences. It is interesting to note that she was over 50 when her first book came out - quite a contrast to today's world where the pressure is to be successful at an early age. Mary was already well known in the scientific community, and the books sold well, further increasing her reputation. ![]() In 1831 Mary's first book Mechanism of the heavens was published. This got her involved in some of the thorny religious questions of the day - but more on that later. Being a keen traveller, she also had an interest in geology. She published papers concerning her experiments in optics - more specifically the effects of different parts of the spectrum on various substances. Chapman also gives us a feel for what questions were being debated at the time, such as the nature of astronomical nebulae - were they condensations of the luminiferous ether? However, Mary's expertise covered a wide range of subjects. In this subject Mary's mathematical skills were much appreciated. In astronomy for instance there was John Herschel, son of the discoverer of Uranus. It is here in the book that one appreciates Chapman's wide knowledge of the history of science as he introduces us to the famous scientists in the Somervilles' circle of acquaintances. This was the time of the Scottish enlightenment and he was happy that they should both play a part rather than being upset because she outshone him. Mary was born in 1780 and was an intelligent child, and an avid reader, but didn't get much of a chance to fulfil her potential until she married her second husband Dr William Somerville in 1812. ![]()

![]() The number density of galaxies inferred from JADES is slightly larger than what is predicted by Simba at z = 11 and z = 12, but at a low level of significance. At higher redshift, only Simba and OBELISK produce galaxies as massive as are found in JADES. The galaxy number density implied by the JADES galaxies at z ~ 10 is consistent with both the simulations and past observations. The most massive JADES galaxies have somewhat lower SFRs than simulated galaxies at z ~ 10, but lie within the scatter of the simulations. "In general, we find that each of these simulations produces galaxies with comparable stellar masses to the JADES galaxies by z ~ 10. I note here the conclusion of the paper. But the exaggerated claims made from the early Webb data aren't enough to worry about yet. In science, it's always important to keep an open mind. Astronomers may yet confirm the distance to a very large galaxy in the early universe that may force us to rethink our understanding of galaxy formation, and maybe even the ΛCDM cosmological model. The appearance of galaxies with 10^8 solar masses in the early universe was no sweat for ΛCDM, the team explained in their research paper, which has been submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters and is available as a preprint via arXiv.Īs usual, this isn't the final answer. If no models could generate galaxies of that mass at that age, then ΛCDM would be in trouble. The simulations allowed the researchers to play around with many kinds of models. 12 amazing James Webb Space Telescope discoveries of 2022 8 ways the James Webb Space Telescope is already revolutionizing astronomy The James Webb Space Telescope is revealing the earliest galaxies of the universe like never before, scientists say So the question then became, does ΛCDM allow for these smaller galaxies to exist at such a young age in the history of the universe, or does the tension remain? However, these galaxies had much smaller masses: around 10^8 and 10^9 solar masses. ![]() All those galaxies were just as distant as the previously identified galaxies, but they had confirmed, reliable distances. Using this more accurate technique, the team found a sample of four galaxies. This technique identifies the spectral lines of known elements emitted by the galaxies and uses them to measure the redshift, and thereby the distance, to the galaxies. To accurately judge if the Big Bang is in trouble, a new team of researchers used Webb to identify galaxies with a much more precise and reliable method of determining distance, known as spectroscopic redshift. That method is notoriously unreliable, with simple effects - like excess dust surrounding the galaxies - making them appear more distant than they really are. For the record-breaking galaxies that could be tension with cosmological models, the researchers relied on something called a photometric redshift, which fits a rough light spectrum of a galaxy to a model to estimate a distance. At the extreme end, the researchers claimed that it might even be possible for no galaxy formation model within the ΛCDM framework to create such large galaxies so quickly.īut those claims hinged on measuring a precise distance to those galaxies - an incredibly difficult task at these extreme distances. The researchers who discovered these galaxies estimated that their large masses put them in tension with many models of galactic formation and evolution. That is still much smaller than the Milky Way, but for the early universe, they are quite gigantic. Several were quite large - well over 10^10 solar masses. So what's the conflict, then? The apparent tension came about because of the estimated masses of those galaxies. In fact, one of the main goals of the Webb telescope was to discover and characterize those first galaxies, so finding galaxies in the incredibly young universe is a point in favor of the Big Bang theory, not against it. ![]() Over hundreds of millions of years, those pockets formed into the first stars, and eventually grew to become the first galaxies. But over time, those density differences grew, with the slightly denser pockets pulling more material onto them. ![]() ![]() ![]() Suspend when computer is in use: Check this to suspend computing and file transfers when you're using the computer.Suspend when computer is on battery: Check this to suspend computing when running on battery power.Example: 75% means compute for 3 seconds, wait for 1 second, and repeat. You're more likely to see an enemy's arm fall off while they charge at you than you are to feel like you hit them.Įnemy AI is awful and frequently veers between being dumb and detecting you through walls. Even when you get better weapons, they feel so incredibly awkward that they're no fun to use. You can unload shots into an enemy, and they won't so much as flinch until they fall over dead. Half of the time, it can be difficult to tell if you're hitting something because there's no sense of feedback to damage. The weapons are clunky and weightless, lacking even the most basic feedback and generally feeling awful to use. If you hoped the combat might be better, you'd be wrong. Even CPR is weird, since the game asks you to blow into your PS5's microphone - something that I haven't seen since the days of the Nintendo Wii. Dragging someone to safety involves walking backward, so you can't see where you're going unless you turn around, which involves dragging your NPC body in a way that looks ridiculous. Saws can only be used at very specific places, and it isn't always clear where. The ax can sometimes break down walls and doors, and it tends to leave edges that are annoying and can catch you as you go through. The various tools feel really janky and awkward. ![]() In theory, that all sounds cool, but in practice, it feels bad. To its credit, the game goes all-in on trying to include various elements of being a firefighter and give it some sense of actual weight. You'll also need to use fire extinguishers and hoses to put out flames to access areas that you couldn't reach before. Sometimes, you need to drag injured people to safety and perform CPR. You need to feel them to see if there's a risk of an explosion when opening the door, and if there is, you need to find a way to vent the flames so you can pry it open. In addition, you sometimes need to actually act as a firefighter. You even need to wear a respirator to keep yourself breathing in unhealthy environments, which adds a time limit to some exploration. The Jaws of Life can be used to force open doors or clamp down pipes to shut off fire spigots. A saw can carve holes in walls to let out air and prevent a backdraft when opening a door. A fire ax can let you bust through walls. Since you play as a firefighter, you have access to a variety of different firefighting tools and rescue techniques. The big gameplay mechanic in Quantum Error is firefighting. I've certainly seen worse stories, but Quantum Error is one of the worst-told stories I've encountered in a full-budget game. Characters barely have personalities, events are poorly explained, and I'd be hard-pressed to tell you what happened besides Bad Thing and Monsters. The actual storytelling feels like someone's student film project, with lots of attempts at artistic visuals that feel kind of toothless or comical. The problem is that it just doesn't work. It's ambitious and goes through multiple time jumps, flashbacks, flashbacks inside time jumps, a weirdly convoluted and slow-paced narrative, and various attempts at horror. Quantum Error's story is mostly incoherent. Before long, you're encountering everything from undead horrors to alien creatures, and you're venturing from the depths of the facility to the deepest reaches of outer space. Of course, your team finds itself trapped inside the lab and under attack by soldiers. You and your team are sent to the Monad Quantum Research Lab to put out a sudden blaze and rescue the lab employees. You play as Jacob Thomas, a firefighter with a tragic past. Quantum Error is set in the distant future. In practice, it ends up being too ambitious for its own good and offers very little beyond visuals. In theory, Quantum Error is an interesting showcase of what a small team can pull off with UE5. Unreal Engine 5 seems like it is going to contribute to that with a really amazing set of options. We've gone from small development teams being able to make something that looks like it belongs on the NES to small development teams creating genuinely impressive and modern titles. It's genuinely impressive how far technology has come. ![]() ![]() ![]() One was sent in for review as well and magnets in the base and in the Juice Pack Air ‘line up’ the Qi coils for maximum efficiency. If you do get a Mophie-branded ‘charging base’ then you also get magnetic alignment. As a rule of thumb, you’ll be able to claw back 2000mAh or so from a fully charged Juice Pack Air. You’ll lose a little of the extra capacity in the transfer process. And, crucially, when you’re charge is running low on the phone, just long press the flush button on the Juice Pack Air’s back and the accessory is now charging the phone. Plug in the charger and the current is split between phone and Juice Pack Air, i.e. Pop the cased iPhone 7 Plus/8 Plus on a Qi charging pad (hey, Mophie make those too!) and it charges away happily (at up to 1A). Technical limitations with Lightning, perhaps? Or just licensing costs? We should be told… A microUSB cable is supplied in the box, of course.īut it all works. The other caveat is that – disappointingly – this charges via microUSB rather than Lightning, and it’s not clear why. But, again, this isn’t for everyday use and when you need the capacity you live with the bulk. The downsides and caveats are partly obvious – the already quite large iPhone 7/8 Plus are made taller and thicker and heavier. Squeezing all this into an extra 6mm isn’t trivial, but the Juice Pack Air is beautifully moulded and, when assembled around the iPhone 7 Plus or 8 Plus (the latter is a slightly tighter fit), the whole feels a little like an iPhone Plus ‘Plus’! Yes, we know the glass backed iPhone 8 Plus has native Qi charging too, but at least you don’t have to say goodbye to this when putting the Mophie on. It’s good to see Mophie embracing the future, getting there ahead of Apple itself – the Juice Pack Air has a Qi wireless charging coil in the back, meaning that when your phone is encased, you can still pop it down on a wireless charging point in a shop or café and it’ll start trickle charging. When not in place, the Juice Pack either stays at home or lives in the briefcase, ready for slapping on at (say) teatime and then you’re good to go for as long as needed. ![]() So yes, you have to decide ahead of time that you’ll need to (pre-charge and) ‘don’ this accessory, but the solution does work. Maybe even for a weekend’s hiking?Īlthough I’m only looking at the Plus models here, the same argument can be made – and more – for the smaller iPhone 7 and 8, of course, wherein their out-of-the-box batteries are roughly doubled. But when you want maximum capacity, with Juice Pack Air ‘on’, the iPhone 7 Plus (and 8 Plus) has around 5300mAh (and 5000mAh respectively) in its tank, and that’s more than enough for the heaviest possible daily use. ![]() True, when in place, the Juice Pack Air significantly adds to the weight (an extra 103g) and thickness (an extra 6mm) of the phone, but I don’t think Mophie expects an owner to use their iPhone in the pack 24/7. The Mophie Juice Pack Air, here in the classic two-part design, carry the day by slotting onto the phone directly and supplying a boost charge with no dangling wires.Īmazing production values and presentation throughout. The only downside is that you’re then carrying and using your iPhone with a cable hanging off it for the next hour and this is inelegant, to say the least. The traditional solution is to plug in a powerbank and, trust me, I have plenty of these. Just when I want entertainment or a Twitter fix on the train home, the battery is down to less than 20% and I’m getting worried. ![]() I’ll be on a big day out, either business or pleasure, and I’ll be on the way home and my phone is on its last legs in terms of battery, after mountains of camera, GPS and general use. The concept and sales pitch first though – who is this type of accessory aimed at? In my life, the following is a semi-regular occurrence, maybe once every few weeks – whichever phone I happen to be using. These ‘Plus’ iPhones have largish batteries and should give a day’s full use, but in practice iOS 11 can suck even these dry on a big day out and which of us hasn’t had issues eking out the last few percent battery on the train home from a concert? The Juice Pack Air is a premium all-in-one solution, with some obvious advantages… and disadvantages. Mophie has been making after-market battery add-ons for the iPhone for years, of course, but recent experiences here with the iPhone 6s Plus, 7 Plus and 8 Plus have led me to investigate the latest Juice Pack Air designs. ![]() ![]() ![]() Look online for guides and reviews for each map individually for a better idea of what your getting. Just like the first game in the series, Hamtaro, while totally chatty in the cartoon series, can only talk in the Hamspeak language in the videogame version. But even the oversaturation of cute and happiness has its charm, and unless you're really insecure about your masculinity, its adorableness isn't so over-the-top to turn you off of the overall adventure. It's like washing down a mouthful of gummi bears with a 2-liter bottle of Jolt. Yes, it's absolutely clear: Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak is one sugary-sweet adventure. The plot for Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak's a little more lovey-dovey: a mean ol' hamster has caused break-ups in relationships all over the hamster community, and it's up to Hamtaro and his "girlfriend" Bijou to remove the hate and put back the love in all of the 20 relationships in the game. The original Hamtaro adventure featured a theme that was pretty safe for those macho types the task was to simply gather all your friends together for an event that was set to happen back at the clubhouse. ![]() |
